What is a COVID visa?
The COVID-19 pathway of the subclass 408 – Temporary Activity visa allows you to temporarily remain in Australia if you work (or have an offer to work) in any sector. This visa is valid for up to 6 months.
From 2 September 2023 to 31 January 2024, only existing COVID-19 Pandemic event visa holders are eligible for a COVID-19 Pandemic event visa.
The COVID-19 Pandemic event visa will close to all applications on 1 February 2024.
If you apply on or after 2 September 2023:
- you will have to pay a Visa Application Charge (VAC).There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you.
- your visa will have a period of stay in Australia of up to six months if granted.
If you applied before 2 September 2023, your visa will have a period of stay in Australia of up to 12 months (or up to 2 years for TGV holders) if granted.

To qualify for a subclass 408 – Temporary Activity visa under this pathway, you must:
- at the time of your application, hold a COVID-19 Pandemic event visa , OR have previously held a COVID-19 Pandemic event visa that expired within the last 28 days
- have evidence of your employment or an offer of employment
- if applicable, meet licencing and registration requirements
- have made adequate arrangements for health insurance during your stay in Australia
- meet the relevant health and character requirements
