485 Visa Graduate Work Stream Overview

The Temporary Graduate visa allows international students who have completed their studies in Australia to continue to live and work in Australia on a temporary basis. The minimum requirements for the Graduate Work stream of this visa are set out below:

485 Visa Graduate Work Stream Requirements

For international students who graduate with eligible Australian qualifications.

You must:

  • be under 50 years of age
  • hold (or held) an eligible student visa during the 6 months immediately before the visa application is lodged
  • in the last 6 months, immediately before the day that you lodge the visa application, have completed one or more qualifications, following at least 2 years of study in Australia

NOTE: Concessions to this requirement may apply if you were outside of Australia between 1 February 2020 and 19 September 2020 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, and you completed your Australian study (as above) in the previous 12 months before lodging the visa application. Online study may be counted towards meeting the Australian study requirement if you were impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions while holding a student visa. Please contact us for further details.
  • have the required level of English proficiency.
    • hold a valid passport issued by the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland (and you are a citizen of that country) OR
  • an IELTS overall test score of at least 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in EACH test component) OR
  • an OET test score of at least B in EACH test component OR
  • a TOEFL iBT overall test score of at least 64 (with a minimum of 4 for listening, 4 for reading, 14 for writing and 14 for speaking) OR
  • a PTE overall test score of at least 50 (with a minimum of 36 in EACH test component) OR
  • a C1 Advanced CAE test score of at least 169 (with a minimum of 154 in EACH test component)

NOTE: In each case, the test must have been undertaken within the three years PRIOR to lodging the visa application.
  • have made adequate arrangements for health insurance during your stay in Australia, and meet the relevant health and character criteria.

Step 1: Consultation

The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our Registered Migration Agents. During the consultation, we will assess your situation and your background.

Note: it is ultimately the evidence that you can obtain supporting your claims that is the determining factor. We will need to review your evidence as an eligibility assessment prior to commencing the skills assessment.

We will send you a fixed fee quote following the consultation which breaks down the applicable fees for each step.

We offer split fee payments to assist you financially during the preparation stages of your Graduate visa journey.

Step 2: Eligibility Assessment

The first step that we will take is to conduct an initial assessment of your eligibility for this visa. This involves reviewing your recent study, English language and other circumstances, to establish whether or not you are likely to meet the relevant requirements.

Note: Our initial assessment of your eligibility does not guarantee that you will (or will not) in fact successfully apply for this visa.

Step 3: Visa Application

After your eligibility has been determined and before lodging your visa application, you must apply for an Australian Federal Police clearance and make bookings to undergo the required health checks. Once you have taken these steps and you have provided the other required information and supporting documents, we will prepare and lodge your visa application with the Department of Home Affairs for assessment. The main criterion is that you meet the requirements referred to above.

You must be in Australia both when your application is lodged and when your visa is granted unless a concession applies. Should your application be successful, you will be granted a visa allowing you to live and work in Australia for 18 months, or 24 months during the COVID-19 concession period (Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders may stay up to 5 years).

PLEASE NOTE: We estimate that it may take several weeks to prepare and lodge your application, with the time taken largely dependent on how promptly you provide us with the necessary supporting information and documents.

The time that it takes the DHA to process your application is dependent upon its processing time service standards, and may also vary due to a number of other factors, including the complexity of your case, perceived risk factors and processing priorities. Please contact us for current information regarding likely processing timeframes for this type of application.
