have made adequate arrangements for health insurance during your stay in Australia, and meet the relevant health and character criteria

Step 1: Consultation

The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our Registered Migration Agents. During the consultation, we will assess your situation and your background.

Note: it is ultimately the evidence that you can obtain supporting your claims that is the determining factor. We will need to review your evidence as an eligibility assessment prior to commencing the skills assessment.

We will send you a fixed fee quote following the consultation which breaks down the applicable fees for each step.

We offer split fee payments to assist you financially during the preparation stages of your Graduate visa journey.

Step 2: Eligibility Assessment

We will first conduct an initial assessment of your eligibility for this visa. This involves reviewing your recent study, English language skills and other circumstances, to establish whether or not you are likely to meet the relevant requirements. We will also consider which MLTSSL occupation(s) you are likely to be able to nominate, and whether or not you are potentially eligible for a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for that occupation.

We will then provide you with informed and comprehensive advice about your ability to meet the minimum standards that the Department of Home Affairs (the DHA) requires of applicants for this visa.

Note: Our initial assessment of your eligibility does not guarantee that you will in fact successfully apply for this visa. The authority to decide and approve a visa application rests solely with the DHA.

Step 3: Skills Assessment

Should our initial assessment indicate that you are eligible for a positive skills assessment and meet the minimum requirements for this visa, we will prepare your skills assessment application.

For each skilled occupation listed on the MLTSSL, the DHA has specified an assessing authority that may carry out skills assessments for that occupation. Only a skills assessment conducted by the relevant assessing authority will be accepted by the DHA in support of a visa application.

We will provide you with a full list of the information and documents required to support your application. When you have provided the necessary details and documents, along with the required assessment fee, we will lodge your application with the applicable skills assessing authority.

Step 4: Visa Application

Once your skills assessment application has been lodged, you must apply for an Australian Federal Police clearance and provide any other required information and supporting documents. We will then prepare and lodge your visa application with the DHA for assessment. The main criterion is that you meet the requirements referred to above.

You must be in Australia both when your application is lodged and when your visa is granted, unless a concession applies. Should your application be successful, you will be granted a visa allowing you to live and work in Australia for 24 months. Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders may stay for up to 5 years.

PLEASE NOTE: We estimate that it may take several weeks to prepare and lodge your application, with the time taken largely dependent on how promptly you provide us with the necessary supporting information and documents.

The time that it takes the DHA to process your application is dependent upon its processing time service standards, and may also vary due to a number of other factors, including the complexity of your case, perceived risk factors and processing priorities. Please contact us for current information regarding likely processing timeframes for this type of application.

485 Visa Post-Study Work Stream Overview

Should your application be successful, you will be granted a visa allowing you to live and work in Australia on a temporary basis. You may be either in Australia or outside Australia when your visa is granted.

Visa Period

This visa is valid for between two and six years, based on the level of the applicant’s recent Australian qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree: TWO years (or four years, for select degrees – see below)
  • Master’s degree: THREE years (or five years, for select degrees)
  • Doctoral degree: FOUR years (or six years, for select degrees)

Visa Extension for Select Degree Holders

Applicants holding a select degree in a verified area of skills shortage may qualify to have their visa extended for an additional two years. You will be granted an extended visa if you are eligible at the time of your application for a visa in the Post-Study Work stream.

Alternatively, if you already hold a subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate visa in the Post-Study Work stream, you may apply to have your current visa extended by two years. Your current subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate visa must be the only visa that you have held in the Post-Study Work stream, and you are only eligible to have this visa extended ONCE.

We will advise you if your Australian qualification allows you to apply for the extended visa period.

NOTE: You MAY be eligible to apply for a second subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate visa, if you have lived and studied in a designated regional area of Australia. Please contact us for further details.
