Update From 23 March 2024 applications lodged for a Temporary Graduate visa will be assessed under the new English Language Requirements. The minimum score required for a TGV from IELTS test score increases from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each component of the test (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The Temporary Graduate visa allows international students who have completed their studies in Australia to continue to live and work in Australia on a temporary basis. The minimum requirements for the Graduate Work stream of this visa are set out below:

For international students who graduate with eligible Australian qualifications.

At the time that you lodge your visa application, you must:

be under 50 years old
hold an eligible student visa, or have held an eligible student visa within the last 6 months
nominate an occupation that is included on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
have applied to have your skills assessed by the appropriate Australian skills assessing authority as suitable for your nominated occupation

NOTE: For your application to be successful, your skills must be assessed as relevant to your nominated occupation.

within the last 6 months, have completed one or more qualifications that are closely related to your nominated occupation, following at least 2 years of study in Australia

NOTE: Online study may be counted towards meeting the Australian study requirement if you were impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions and could not enter Australia while holding a student visa. Please contact us for further details.

have the required level of English proficiency i.e.
hold a valid passport issued by the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland (and you are a citizen of that country) OR

Step 2: Eligibility Assessment

We will first conduct an initial assessment of your eligibility for this visa. This involves reviewing your recent study, English language skills and other circumstances, to establish whether or not you are likely to meet the relevant requirements. We will also consider which MLTSSL occupation(s) you are likely to be able to nominate, and whether or not you are potentially eligible for a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for that occupation.

We will then provide you with informed and comprehensive advice about your ability to meet the minimum standards that the Department of Home Affairs (the DHA) requires of applicants for this visa.

Note: Our initial assessment of your eligibility does not guarantee that you will in fact successfully apply for this visa. The authority to decide and approve a visa application rests solely with the DHA.

Step 3: Skills Assessment

Should our initial assessment indicate that you are eligible for a positive skills assessment and meet the minimum requirements for this visa, we will prepare your skills assessment application.

For each skilled occupation listed on the MLTSSL, the DHA has specified an assessing authority that may carry out skills assessments for that occupation. Only a skills assessment conducted by the relevant assessing authority will be accepted by the DHA in support of a visa application.

We will provide you with a full list of the information and documents required to support your application. When you have provided the necessary details and documents, along with the required assessment fee, we will lodge your application with the applicable skills assessing authority.

Step 4: Visa Application

Once your skills assessment application has been lodged, you must apply for an Australian Federal Police clearance and provide any other required information and supporting documents. We will then prepare and lodge your visa application with the DHA for assessment. The main criterion is that you meet the requirements referred to above.

You must be in Australia both when your application is lodged and when your visa is granted, unless a concession applies. Should your application be successful, you will be granted a visa allowing you to live and work in Australia for 24 months. Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders may stay for up to 5 years.

The 485 – Skilled – Graduate visa allows international students who have completed their studies in Australia to live and work in Australia on a temporary basis. The minimum requirements for the Post-Study Work stream of this visa are set out below:

Note: You must have applied for (and been granted) your FIRST Australian Student visa on or after 5 November 2011.

Extensions are available if you already hold a Post-Study Work visa and are eligible for the additional 2 years with a select degree.

For applications lodged from 29 December 2023, first Post-Study Work visa applicants with a bachelor degree with first class honours in STEM, including ICT, who hold an Indian passport may be eligible for an additional 1 year on their first Post-Study Work visa under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA). These applicants are only eligible for this additional year on their first Post-Study Work visa if they are not eligible for the extended 2 years under select degree. Applicants are only eligible for one extended period and will be granted the most beneficial grant period. Any further applications for extensions will be made invalid.
